Tim Day is a gay Republican running for a city council seat in Washington. While trying to win over voters, Day is also trying to win over the District’s gay community, which is skeptical of the Republican Party. Day says it’s harder for him to tell his fellow gays that he’s a Republican than it was for him to come out as gay. This sentiment is echoed by many other gay Republicans, locally and nationally. In this story, we follow Day as he campaigns, and we also talk to Clarke Cooper of the gay conservative group Log Cabin Republicans as well as to Dan Savage, prominent gay rights activist and liberal pundit.
